This study sought to determine if body image fluctuates across situation and if gender differences exist therein. It also examined how individual factors influence this variation. Measures of body image saliency and satisfaction, fitness orientation and internalization were administered to 182 female and 136 male students at a large midwestern university. Body image was measured across five different situations (presented through guided imagery) based on social versus non-social components and body focused and non-body focused situations: in a gym, at the union, alone, in a dressing room and at the beach. The overall effect of situation was found to be significant for women, but not for men; however, situational differences existed for certain aspects of the body for both women and men. Changes across situation were affected by body mass index, appearance evaluation and fitness orientation among females. Group differences (e.g., high versus low fitness orientation) existed among males. Certain limited ethnic comparisons were also conducted, and results suggest that African American women do not vary in body image across situation, unlike their White counterparts, and Asian American and White men do not differ in response to situation. Implications of the findings, limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed.
