Harmonic interval preference in twelve-tone composition: a comparison of theory and practice in Schoenberg's work

Anderson, Timothy Reges

Abstract Details

1999, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Music.
An analysis of the harmonic intervals in a sample of works by Arnold Schoenberg reveals an overall prevalence of consonant intervals. Further, when compared against randomized re-ordering of the same music, analysis reveals an overall preference for consonant intervals. Preference of and preference for dissonant intervals significantly increase during the free atonal and twelve-tone works. However, dissonant interval preference never completely surpasses consonant interval preference. These findings appear to be inconsistent with Schoenberg's own ideals regarding the organization of music.
