Abstract Details

2005, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Psychology.
This thesis is primarily concerned with how nucleus basalis cholinergic neurons influence defense behavior that may model fear and anxiety. A brief historical perspective of neuroscientific approaches to studying aversive emotions and a review of studies documenting the effect of nucleus basalis cholinergic lesions on defense responses are initially provided. Results from the experiments conducted in this thesis suggest that selective cholinergic lesions in the nucleus basalis attenuate approach-avoidance conflict when approach for a consumable reward is involved as part of the conflict. The results from the experiments also suggest that cortical arousal and modulation of motivational systems may be mechanisms by which nucleus basalis cholinergic neurons influence approach-avoidance conflict that involves a consumable reward. Approach-avoidance conflict is believed to be a potent source of anxiety and as a result, nucleus basalis cholinergic neurons may mediate anxiety that emerges from an approach-avoidance conflict.
