In first part of dissertation, we study the problem of selection of layout types for different kinds of jobs. Each job is assigned either to a Job Shop or to a dedicated Flow Line. The objective is to minimize total cost. We show that the recognition version of this problem is unary NP-complete. We develop a dynamic programming algorithm which is pseudo-polynomial when the number of machine types is fixed. A greedy heuristic procedure is developed and evaluated. We provide a constant, analytic bound on the worst-case performance of the heuristic and show that the bound is attainable. We also find cases that the heuristic produces an optimal solution. A computational study is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the heuristic. In second part of dissertation, we study a scheduling problem in a two-stage mixed flexible flowshop where the first stage is equipped with several identical parallel discrete processors and the second stage has one batch processor. This environment is motivated by manufacturing of integrated circuits in semiconductor industry. The performance measure is makespan. This problem is NP-hard. We develop two heuristics, provide worst-case performance bounds, and show that the bounds are attainable. We also find several cases where an optimal solution can be obtained in polynomial time. In addition, we extend our analysis to the total completion time problem and show that the recognition version of the problem is unary NP-complete.
