Despite breastfeeding education, promotion and support, breastfeeding rates continue to be lower in WIC participants. This study explored WIC mothers perceptions of breastfeeding. A self-administered questionnaire was given to 225 biological mothers of infants under the age of one participating in a Central Ohio WIC program. The questionnaire collected data regarding breastfeeding practices, perceptions of breastfeeding, and socio-demographic characteristics. Mothers who chose to not breastfeed most often indicated they did so due to the dislike of breastfeeding, time factors, pain associated with breastfeeding and cultural influence. Mothers who breastfed greater than one month identified more breastfeeding values and promoters and fewer barriers than mothers who did not. When stratified by race/ethnicity, breastfeeding values also varied. Education methods that include client and family-centered sessions, peer counselors and group discussions and are culturally sensitive may be beneficial for decreasing barriers and increasing breastfeeding initiation rates.
