An investigative experimental study was conducted on the cross correlation velocity measurement method in turbulent single-phase air and water pipe flows. T-type and K-type fast response thermocouples were used to test the cross correlation velocity measurement method. The effects of the flow temperature, the signal sample length, and the distance between the sensors on the accuracy of the velocities determined from the cross correlation method were investigated. A baseline comparison of sensor response characteristics was also conducted using T-type fast response thermocouples and fiber optic temperature sensors. The feasibility of use of the fiber optic sensors in Generation IV nuclear reactors was assessed. It was found that even though fiber optic sensors provide a quick response, the sampling rates as well as the extreme fragility of the sensors provide a major hindrance in the possibility of the use of these sensors in industry for purposes of cross correlation velocity measurement. The cross correlation tests using the T-type thermocouples proved to be relatively accurate, but not to the desired level. Signal noise in combination with the small time scale being investigated and the thermocouple response limits proved to be the limiting factors in this method of velocity measurement.
