Discourse and Detection: Gendered Readings of Scientific and Legal Evidence in the Victorian Novel

Rhodes, Robi R.

Abstract Details

2008, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, English.
The dissertation examines the link between representations of gender professionalization in the Victorian novel and the introduction of new methods and practices in the field of forensic science. As the fields of science, medicine, and law made significant contributions to the field of forensic investigation, the practices, discourse, and methods of these disciplines are examined closely. Female investigators in the Victorian novel work within gender expectations while integrating more subjective epistemological approaches, such as memory and intuition, into existing professional practices. Thus, the novels gesture toward the challenges that women face and the skills they acquire in entering disciplinary practices.
