Study of Network Design Factors That Influence Industrial Fieldbus Network-Based System Integration

Abstract Details

2009, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Industrial and Systems Engineering.
A signal system for controlling and measuring has been developed for various industrial networks. There are many types of industrial networks for system control and measurement. The influence of design factors on industrial networks has been studied. The industrial network has been changed in various facilities. As more industrial operations advance to automation, the need for industrial network increases. The aims of this paper are to study the representative industrial network referred to as a fieldbus, to identify the significant factors that affect the network design by network simulation, to suggest which significant factors are more effective when designing the industrial network and to demonstrate how to design the networks by different factors. The fieldbus technology started to be developed when it was necessary to organize the signal transmission system of communication networks. A variety of industrial controls and automatic devices are connected to the fieldbus network. To make the network more efficient, it is important to know which factors influence the network significantly. The network simulator, OPNET is used for network simulation and statistical analysis of the program, MINI-TAB is used for analyzing the data of DOE (Design of Experiment). This paper describes the way to make a network model by OPNET and how to analyze the data of an experiment. The author has developed the method to design networks that have different factors using OPNET and has found the significant factors that influence a network such as the topology (ring and star) and the type of hub ( hub and switch). The method of design and analysis, presented in this paper, can be adopted by any networks that have different factors.
