Abstract
Image processing for material science is a relatively new research area that has been gaining importance lately. The goal is to automate the image analysis, which is traditionally and still is, primarily human driven. The reasons for automation are manifold, with two major reasons being speed and precision. This thesis presents an image processing algorithm to segment columnar laths in gray-scale steel-weld images. It employs many tools from image processing theory; such as median-filtering for noise-removal, Otsu’s segmentation and dilation/erosion from morphology. The image processing is primarily a shape-recognition problem where the goal is to identify columnar grain structures from these images. We use “skeleton” approaches to accomplish this. A theoretical analysis of the various image processing techniques is presented in the beginning, followed by results of the algorithm. The correctness of the algorithm has been verified both qualitatively (visually) and quantitatively (intercept measure) with human-analysis.
