We present work on the fundamental photophysics of electron transfer between 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid (9-AC) and TiO2 as a first step in understanding the photophysical properties of ligands in metallo-organic complexes. The complexes have applications in a proposed metallo-organic photovoltaic (MOPV) device consisting of a broad-spectrum absorber that is covalently bound through a carboxylic acid on each ligand to a nano-porous TiO2 structure. Integral to the improved efficiency of the proposed device is efficient electron transfer between the light absorbing layer and the TiO2. Before investigating the electron transfer from a metallo-organic complex, we work to understand the electronic structure and the electron transfer dynamics of the ligands. We observe ultrafast electron transfer dynamics from the photoexcited singlet state of the 9-AC to the TiO2 nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of the radical cation. The process of the electron transfer, which results in the radical cation, is studied with ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. The formation of the radical cation is found to occur within the first 0.6 ps after excitation and have a lifetime of 85 ns and is formed from the electron transfer from an excited singlet state of the 9-AC.
