Factors Influencing Support for Prescribed Burning and Mechanical Thinning Among Wildland-Urban Interface Residents in the Lake Tahoe Basin

The current study aims to further knowledge into factors influencing support for fuel management in the wildland-urban interface. This was accomplished through the development of two separate studies. The first, a survey based approach, used four factors (knowledge, affect, exposure levels, and perceived risk) in the development oftwo separate models intended to further explain the individual effects of each factor on support for prescribed burning and mechanical thinning. Standard multiple regression analysis indicated that of the four factors, risk perception and affect were found to play the largest role in determining support for both tactics with exposure and knowledge playing a less significant role. The second study aimed to better understand how framing decisions about fuels management as either a restoration from a loss or a strict improvement from the status quo affects willingness to accept both the risks associated with fuel management, as well as individual tactics (prescribed burning, mechanical thinning). It was found that framing a fuel management plan as a restoration from a loss increased willingness to accept risks associated with the fuel management plan, but did not in turn influence support for individual tactics.
