An Experimental Investigation of Penetrative Convection in Water Near 4 Degrees Celsius

Abstract Details

2010, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Physics.
Penetrative convection in water near its maximum density temperature is investigated visually through shadowgraph and schlieren imaging in rectangular boxes of aspect ratio 1.6 x 8.7 and 1.7 x 6.8. Observations are made over as wide a range of parameters as the two systems allow. Several expected features, such as partial height convection rolls, and asymmetric flow are confirmed. The Rayleigh number at which convection is observed to begin (which in this case is a modified version of the classic Rayleigh number) is compared successfully with the predictions of a linear stability theory which expresses the density of water as a fifth-order polynomial in temperature. In addition, three unexpected flow states are observed at moderately supercritical values of the Rayleigh number. These transitions between flow states follow a repeatable sequence, although where the transitions occur apparently depends on the history of the system.
