Headwater Landscape Variations and Biodiversity: Applicability of Ohio Habitat Evaluation Indices in a Glacier Catchment of the Mekong River

A comparative analysis of the Headwater Habitat Evaluation Index (HHEI) and Headwater Macroinvertebrate Field Evaluation Index (HMFEI) was performed between the Killbuck, Ohio watershed in the USA, and the Mingyong, Yunnan glacier watershed in China. Biological samples were collected from several habitats per stream by using a .093m2 surber net. The ability of the scored HHEI parameters (pool, bankfull width, and substrate) to classify streams into ephemeral/intermittent, warm-water, and cold-water classes in Ohio was evaluated at all sampling locations. Additional quantitative habitat data were collected to determine which habitat parameters had correlations with the HMFEI score and might impact the stream classification. Highest diversity was found in the spring streams of both watersheds, with glacier watershed biodiversity reflecting a correlation with water source type and related hydro-chemical measures. Statistically significant correlations were found between several unscored habitat parameters and invertebrate biodiversity, suggesting that water temperature, flow rate, percent glacier contribution, pH, and conductivity should be considered further as parameters to predict biodiversity and classify streams using the HHEI assessment tool. Habitat data from an additional one-hundred and twenty-four headwater streams were collected and analyzed to elucidate important research areas in out-of-biome contexts.
