Abstract
While Latino migration to the Midwest is not a recent phenomenon, a significant increase in Latinos settling in new rural and urban centers has been ongoing for the past three decades as a growing number of Latinos are moving away from historically designated gateway destinations. The rapid growth of Mexican immigrants in the Midwest is distinctive. Many of these new destinations do not serve as new gateway centers, but rather as secondary destination sites as immigrants and their families engage in an internal secondary migration in the U.S. Attracted by new economic opportunities, Mexican immigrants settling in Midwest are transforming the local demographic, social and economic landscapes. However, this population growth is often ignored or inadequately addressed by local policy makers and service providers. With heightened tensions between local native-born residents and newcomers, immigrants are faced with not only challenges of coping with stress due to migration, but also reception by the local community. This pilot study examines the growth of Columbus’ Mexican population. It focuses on the reception of Mexicans into Columbus. Using ethnographic methods and data on the physiological indicators of stress among long-term residents and newcomers, I examine how Mexican immigrants organize and create a sense of Mexicanidad in Columbus. Secondly, I examine the perceptions that Mexican immigrants hold regarding their reception by the larger Columbus community. Lastly, I compare and contrast the physiological evidence of stress in relation to cultural perceptions of stress.
