Abstract
Fulfilling the personalized medicine ideal involves capturing detailed data on the genomics, genetics and family history of an individual. Recording this information challenges existing patient record systems. Consequently, The Ohio State University’s Clinical Cancer Genetics and Medical Genetics program (CCG) developed a comprehensive database to serve as a repository for the program’s clinic and research data. Since inception, the application has not undergone any formal evaluation. To ensure the database meets user needs and to identify where improvements and enhancements might occur it was determined the usability of the database should be evaluated. The research design used for this study consisted of a self-report survey instrument to address user satisfaction and secondly, ethnographic observation to characterize the effectiveness and efficiency of the database application. Among all the variables, users opinions about appropriateness of GUI layout and usefulness of the database is significantly associated with database satisfaction (p-value= 0.001 and 0.02 respectively). Spearman correlation test showed the satisfaction is highly correlated with the total score with a correlation coefficient of 0.64 (p-value=0.003). This means users with frequent use are more satisfied with the CCG database. In spite of this, there remains room for improvement. With additional refinements, the CCG database can become an even more useful tool in the advancement of clinical genetics and personalized medicine.
