Performing Tenderness

Abstract Details

2010, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.
For the last seven years of my grandmother’s life I photographed her. Taking photographs became our way of being together. I often felt with these moments a fullness of life and a sense of urgency to record her, to know her, to save her in parts and in moments so that when the day came when she was no longer with me, I would not regret or feel the total loss of her. Over time, the camera has become a tool through which my family and I experience intimacy and perform tenderness, in ways that couldn’t happen without the camera. The images we create function as an emotional narrative and exist as evidence of our interaction, as if to say this is the way we were, or wish we could be, in life. The still photographs and moving image remain as a stand-in for emotions that exist beyond words.
