Abstract Details

2010, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Sociology.
Energy efficiency is becoming a leading indicator of economic development, as it expresses how much wealth a country creates per unit of energy expended. The more efficient a country and its economy, the less it is affected by oil price shocks and energy instability while also alleviating the environmental problems caused from the mining, drilling and pollution from fossil fuels. However, many factors, such as population concentrations, transportation modes, and global trade can influence energy consumption and prevent dramatic gains in efficiency. This paper uses a human ecological framework to measure the true impact of increased wealth, urban population, vehicle ownership and oil price on energy efficiency, effects that must be understood in order to make better policy decisions governing energy use and environmental health. Using pooled time-series regression on a cross-national database, this paper is the largest comparative study to date on energy efficiency and will shed new light on the potential energy sustainability of nations in the 21st century.
