Abstract
Latinos, the largest and fastest growing minority group in the U.S., have the lowest levels of political participation in the American political system. This raises issues about their political incorporation—representation and influence—and the future of American politics. Past research suggests that how Latinos are politically socialized and experience race can explain their future political incorporation. I expand prior research on Latino participation by focusing on the relationship between structural assimilation and political incorporation by using a national survey of Latinos, by using two types of networks’ indication of closeness to the racial majority, and by examining how structural assimilation influences several measures of political participation that indicate the adoption of participation norms and an orientation towards American politics. Analyses of the Latino National Survey 2006 reveal that structural assimilation significantly increases the likelihood of voting and greater interest in American politics. This finding suggests that, in addition to standard predictors of Latino political participation, social network variables and other forms of interracial contact can shed light on the socialization process that leads to greater political participation of Latinos.
