Abstract
After China entered the World Trade Organization in 2001, its international influence and economic power increased dramatically, making it an important international player. As a result, China’s foreign policy has become an object of international attention, both in terms of China’s motives, and its potential as a threat or partner. This paper examines recent international events to establish trends and influences on Chinese Foreign Policy from both the idealist and realist perspectives of international relations theory. In doing so, it attempts to predict possible reactions and develop an in-depth understanding of the driving factors behind certain Chinese foreign policy decisions. These have led the author to conclude that the complex relationship between China and the West, if handled correctly, can lead to the peaceful inclusion of China in the current international structure, while a continuance of “cold war style” policies could potentially create diplomatically insurmountable conflicts.
