The Effects of Initial Status and Cohort on Suburban Neighborhood Status Change

Shrider, Emily A.

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Sociology.
Growing levels of suburban poverty and socioeconomic heterogeneity have led to increased interest in processes of suburban neighborhood decline. Most studies in this vein have used age as a predictor of decline, only to discover that neighborhoods and suburbs built in the post-war period are faring worse than neighborhoods built before or since. This suggests that age might not be the best predictor of decline. This study uses a cohort approach instead and focuses on the initial status of the neighborhood as a predictor of decline and turnover. Using longitudinal data with contingency tables and logistic regression, I examine the relationship between initial status, cohort, and future status outcomes and argue that the period in which a neighborhood was built influences its future status outcomes. I also argue that initial status influences the likelihood of decline, although this effect may be mediated by neighborhood characteristics.
