The Privatization and Nationalization of Government-Owned Industries in China

Nationalized industries have always played an important role in China’s socialist economy. The financial crisis of 2008 affected the entire world, but the effect on private industries was much greater than the effect on government-owned industries. Because of this many economist have believed that the Chinese government is now perusing a nationalization campaign at the cost of privatization, while other economists believe that private firms caused the financial crisis and China should indeed be pursuing a nationalization strategy. This paper will discuss the reasons behind the privatization and nationalization of China’s industries from a historical and factual point of view. The author will also state his opinions on future Chinese government policies in regards to this issue. This paper will first discuss the historical origins of privatization and nationalization in China. It will then discuss privatization, and the results that it brings, the challenges China faces when pursuing privatization, and the most common forms of privatization in China. This paper will then discuss two privatization examples, one Chinese, one foreign. Finally, this paper will discuss nationalization of industries in China, and whether it is new government policy to pursue a course of nationalization, or whether any recent nationalization trends in China are simply a short-term phenomenon. Lastly, this paper will discuss the effects of nationalization on a few of China’s key industries.
