The use of focused ion beam (FIB) for machining micro-cantilevers for Mechanical testing of bone at small length-scales is investigated. Bone is a multi-layered, multi-scale composite made up of distinct constituents at different size scales. The aim of this project is to measure the mechanical properties of these individual components through bending experiments, in order to model the aggregate behavior under conditions such as age or disease. Microcantilevers with dimensions on the order of 10 microns were selectively machined within microstructural regions of interest, such as osteons. The load-displacement response under a variety of test conditions was then obtained using a modified nanoindenter. Elastic modulus measurements of wet and dry bovine cortical bone are in agreement with bulk measurements. Load relaxation experiments reveal two relaxation time constants which we hypothesize to be associated with rearrangements happening within the organic phase and the discharge of water, respectively.
