New media is quickly superseding traditional media as the most effective tool for the dissemination of information in our modern age. With the rise of the internet and increasing popularity of mobile devices, new media’s diversified and flexible information gateways are permeating ordinary Chinese lives, and are especially useful during quickly-arising incidents in China. Traditional media such as newspaper, television, and radio are unable to fulfill demands for timely, updateable, diversified, and instantaneous on-site reporting of mass incidents which are defined by their quickly arising, dangerous, changing, and confused qualities. This paper explores the qualities of new media and the manner in which new media platforms have been used for grassroots and official reporting during incidents such as the death of Qian Yunhui. While new media is essential for reporting on such incidents, it carries with it intrinsic and deep-rooted shortcomings in reliability, veracity, and content quality controls. Ultimately, new media and traditional media should be employed as a single, large-scale interactive information network for optimum results.
