Upon a time: poetry in animation

Abstract Details

2003, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.

The writing presented in this thesis is an attempt to analyze the similarities between the processes of writing poetry and image sequencing in animation.

Time-based media is defined as media that exploit time in conveying its message. What sets animation apart from the other visual time-based media, such as film and video, is the fact that its imagery and time are synthetic. Both the visuals and the time of animated film are generated by animator using different techniques, such as painting, collage, sculpture, computer, and others. Principles of time construction in animation have formed in response to development of animation techniques, principles of editing used in live-action cinematography, and conceptual ideas of individual animators.

Although these methods yielded various ways of conveying a message, or telling a story, further focus on phenomenological treatment of time can open more potential of animation as a time-based medium. This means constructing time in such a way the temporal experience becomes as convincing as a spatial experience in architecture and sculpture . This thesis argues that sound poetry offers a principle of designing such experience. In addition, the medium of poetry accommodates conveyance of themes and notions that are difficult to approach through narration.

The making of the animation Memory of Hope used the idea of rhyme and meter to construct the rhythmic pattern of the image sequence. The process involved approaching camera shots as lines in a stanza, camera movement as prosodic, and movement of objects and characters within shots, as having dynamic quality of words linked in a line of a poem. The design of characters and movement was further informed by ideas of metaphor, synecdoche and metonymy. The scene sequencing was accomplished with computer software AfterEffects 6.0. Memory of Hope was produced in 3d software Maya 3.0-5.0.
