My creative work at the Ohio State University focused on investigating connections between glass art and our American society. Because of its beauty, glass is held in an excess of high regard by nearly every artist working with it. In like manner, patrons rarely look for more than just glass's material properties. By using precious and expensive hand blown glass in unexpected combinations with odd everyday materials like house paint, glue, tape, toilet paper, soup, jellies, lipstick, plastic bags, decals, powdered sugar, Vaseline, honey, steel wool, chocolate and urine, I create glass art that illustrates the idea of being imperfect while remaining undaunted. These works are mixed media sculptures whose layers can be unraveled to consider real world issues like worth, potential, beauty, defacement, spontaneity, violence, expectations, distaste and disapproval.
