Developing spatial visualization in engineering students combining graphic interface, games, and the internet

Abstract Details

2002, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Industrial, Interior Visual Communication Design.

Learning visual communication skills are crucial to the engineering, architecture and design professions. Students pursuing these professions must be able to communicate ideas graphically. Most beginning students find it difficult to even recognize that a plan view of an object describes the view of an object from above. An understanding of Linear Perspective is necessary in order to overcome this inability to "see". To illustrate that changing a viewpoint of an object also changes its appearance, a web based multimedia application is proposed. Moving vantage points will be animated and interactive to optimize the educational value. An environment that uses VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) enhances interactivity and improves the cognition of three-dimensional shapes and their surrounding environment. This environment will be in the form of an educational game or a web based activity, thus providing a more marketable educational tool for the students of today and tomorrow.
