A transparent melange: an interior analysis of the creative process through a production of Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie

Johnson, Donovan Theodore, III

Abstract Details

1996, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Theatre.

The directing process is analyzed from project acceptance to post-production feedback through Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie. Preliminary research is discussed as to its usefulness towards a production concept. Production designs are melded together; theatre as a collaborative art form is established. Then, the rehearsal process is detailed, from casting decisions to exercises used for text analysis with the actors. Production meetings, polishing, and further research are dissected for effectiveness to the play and its communication. Finally, the run of the show, including problems and successes, are discussed in terms of audience reaction and emotional reaction. The entire process is then subjectively (and objectively) reviewed for successful techniques, techniques needing improvement, and techniques to avoid. Inherent in this analysis is a look into the life of Tennessee Williams, his playwriting technique and style, and specifically, his process towards writing The Glass Menagerie.
