Chinese-American Transnational Marriage: Cultural differences and marital satisfaction

This thesis uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore the relationship between cultural differences and marital satisfaction in Chinese-American transnational marriages. During semi-standardized interviews with couples living in Beijing, several common cultural issues arose, such as language and communication, adjustment and attitudes towards spouse’s culture, in-laws and family, politics, money spending habits, and children. An online survey measured individual acculturation and enculturation and compared it with individual and couple’s marital satisfaction. Although it was found that individual’s cultural adjustment could not significantly predict their spouse’s marital satisfaction, for Chinese participants, the degree of cultural adjustment was positively correlated with their marital satisfaction.
