Unlike more passive forms of media, interactive video games allow players to make many choices during gameplay. Although previous research has examined the kinds of choices players make, previous research has not examined the consequences of making these choices. This study examines how the ability to make choices influences players’ motivation, self-esteem, and enjoyment. A 2 (choice/no choice) x 2 (payment/no payment) between-subjects design was employed. Participants chose one of six video games to play or were assigned to play one, and were either paid to play or were not paid to play. Dependent variables included intrinsic motivation, enjoyment, and self-esteem. Payment decreased intrinsic motivation and had no effect on enjoyment for players who could choose, and increased intrinsic motivation and enjoyment for players who could not choose. Choice also boosted self-esteem. These findings suggest that reward decreases motivation to play video games when players can choose what to play.
