This paper is a study of college and graduate students in Qingdao and their views on the influence of “mianzi” (face) and “renqing” (benevolence) in Sino-Japanese relations. This paper uses the 2010 Sino-Japanese ship collision incident and 2011 Chinese earthquake assistance to Japan as examples to explore the relation between 1. “mianzi” and conflict in Chinese diplomatic relations, 2. “renqing” and China’s cooperation with other countries. Specifically, these two cases seek to analyze 1. Whether or not Qingdao college and graduate students view “mianzi” as influential in China’s negotiation during times of conflict with other countries; 2. Whether or not Qingdao college and graduate students view “renqing” as an influential factor in providing earthquake assistance to each other’s country. “Mianzi” and “renqing” can be viewed from two different perspectives: the first is to see them as a unique social phenomenon; the second is to see them as being characteristic of China but also having universal significance. In this paper, “mianzi” and “renqing” are also discussed from a social science perspective. “Mianzi” provides guidelines in human social interaction much akin to “traffic rules”. “Renqing” deals with reciprocity in relations between acquaintances and friends. The manifestation of “mianzi” and “renqing” may vary depending on the culture, but its importance is universal.
