Development of a Comprehensive Dental Trauma Database

Objective: The objective of this project was to develop a system to facilitate the collection, analysis and quality improvement of dental trauma data at a children’s hospital. A specific aim was to create a database structure that would allow for the integration of medical, cost, time, and follow-up information with dental trauma data for analysis that will be reported on in a subsequent study. Another specific aim of this project was to discuss the challenges of creating and implementing a dental trauma tracking system. Method: Using a computer-based hospital charting system, a comprehensive, sophisticated and online dental trauma database stored in an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) was created to analyze patient information collected by dental residents. Custom digital dental trauma flowsheets were created for data entry. Data collection is from both the hospital emergency department and an outpatient dental clinic. All data collected relates to permanent tooth trauma. Dental trauma information that had been collected since 2003 on standardized paper forms was also incorporated into the new database. Conclusion: The result of this project is a tool in which customized reports on a vast array of dental trauma data can be run to analyze prevalence, etiology, epidemiology, cost, comorbidities, treatment and follow-up information.
