It’s About Time: Understanding Gendered Behavior Among Single and Married Parents Through Housework, Childcare, and Leisure Time

Passias, Emily Jean

Abstract Details

2013, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Sociology.
Why do men and women behave differently? Is it due to inherent, biological differences, or due to the differing social contexts that men and women face? In this research, I tease out the effects of economic and social resources to address the individualist and structuralist perspectives directly. Using data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), I examine gendered time use patterns among married and single parents on several different dimensions. I examine housework, childcare, and leisure time among married and single parents, comparing not just the amount of time spent in housework, but also the types of activities being done. Taken as a whole, my results provide new evidence in the individualist versus structuralist debate about gendered behavior, and suggest that gendered behavior is a result of structural circumstances, rather than predetermined by biology.
