Linearizing and Distributing Engine Models for Control Design

Turbine engine control is used widely today and is about to undergo a revolution in its control architecture. Currently, all calculations are done on a single computer, known as the full authority digital engine controller (FADEC), which requires many cables, harnesses, and pins that add weight to the system. To improve performance and efficiency, a distributed architecture is being proposed to allow for advancement to take place. Distributed engine control will allow the sensor and actuators to act as nodes, carrying out A/D and D/A conversions as well as potentially control logic. This architecture also allows for easier design of the engine’s control system by allowing it to be more scalable and prevent obsolescence. However, implementing control logic over a network induces time varying delays which need to be designed around. This paper proposes different setups that attempt to make the system robust to these delays, by implementing discrete control systems with observers to estimate non-present sensor data.
