Abstract Details

2013, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Human Ecology: Human Development and Family Science.
This study investigated the relationships between various maternal characteristics, including observed positive emotion expression, positive and negative emotionality, depressive symptoms, and the frequency and intensity of parenting stress, that are associated with the child emotion socialization process. A person-centered, clustering approach was applied in order to classify distinct maternal profiles defined by these characteristics. Four profiles were identified, labeled Happy, Intense, Flat, and Distressed, based on significant, differing levels of the defining maternal variables. These profiles were then examined in there relations to child outcomes, including observed positive and negative emotion expression and internalizing and externalizing behaviors. The maternal profiles were found to be to significantly associated with the child outcomes, and differences between the profiles and their associations were discussed.
