Manufactured in the room of sensory depravation

Abstract Details

2007, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.

The act of making this body of work was exceptionally boring. Much of the labor done for my Master of Fine Arts thesis show was done in a state of pseudo solitary confinement. Under fluorescent light, rock erodes. The mind wanders but must remain attentive. Vision becomes blurry and skewed. Patterns begin to move and undulate. Time's relativity changes. Measurements are based on unconventional waypoints. The labor eventually comes to a conclusion, and the protective barrier is unwrapped.

Inspiration for this work comes from India, specifically, the geometric patterns that are seen in stone screens of Indian architecture. My trip to India brought about a sea change in how I approach my art. Aspects remain consistent from previous work I have done. Since India, I have utilized color and surface manipulation much more prevalently.

Much of this thesis is related to process. The act of creating the body of work referenced in this writing is as important as the finished product. I am really intrigued by the creating, thinking, and experimenting process. This thesis aims to clarify some of the thought processes and my methods of manufacture.
