“A Mean City”: The NAACP and the Black Freedom Struggle in Baltimore, 1935-1975” This dissertation traces the history and activities of the Baltimore branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from its revitalization during the Great Depression to the end of the Black Power Movement. It examines the NAACP’s efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and segregation in a city and state that was “neither North nor South”. Under the long-time leadership of Lillie Jackson, the branch grew into one of the largest and most successful branches of the Association. During her presidency, the branch facilitated the growth of the freedom struggle beyond Baltimore into other areas of Maryland, and its organizing efforts served as models by the national NAACP for freedom struggles in other areas of the South. In doing so, its ideas, tactics, strategies, and methods influenced the growth of the national civil rights movement.
