Creating a unified production in a theatrical setting requires a production team, utilizing their particular skills and talents to interpret a text in a way that will best illuminate the subject matter for the audience. The process is deeply rooted in a collaborative process, with the production team united under the director. Included in the chapters is an in-depth documentation of the elements involved in the lighting design process for The Ohio State University’s production of Neil Bartlett's translation of Moliere's The Misanthrope. The production was staged during winter quarter in Thurber Theatre, located in Drake Union on The Ohio State University main campus, as part of the Department of Theatre’s 1998-99 season. The entirety of the lighting designer’s process is explored, from the parameters imposed upon the designer by such factors as the architecture of the space and the availability of equipment to the visceral, non-tactile translation of research into cues. Detailed descriptions of the final design choices are included, as is a self-evaluation. A synopsis and a brief analysis of the text and history of the original script and of the Bartlett translation are included in the document. Particular attention is paid to the verse structure, similar to the original French text, which this translation utilizes.
