The Concordance Between Children's Performance During a Standardized Testing Session and Teachers' Observational Assessment in the Classroom

Abstract Details

2001, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Human Ecology: Human Development and Family Science.
This study examined the concordance between two types of measures, teachers' evaluation by observational assessment in the classroom context and children's performance in a standardized individual interview session. Data was collected from 66 teachers and 122 children in the Head Start Programs across Ohio. Results showed moderate agreement between the two types of measures in both Language/Literacy and Math domains; however, the amount of agreement was higher in Language/Literacy than Math. In addition, the pattern of disagreements between types of assessments, or measurement errors, also varied across domains. While, over and under estimation of children's abilities occurred equally often in Math, there was a greater tendency for children's abilities to be underestimated in Language/Literacy by the observational measure. Teacher ratings of children's social development was positively related to assessment accuracy or concordance between measures, but teachers' experience, education level, and beliefs regarding assessment did not affect concordance between types of assessment.
