Identification of Issues and Opportunities of Design Entrepreneurship: Product Commercialization as a Design Business Trend

Abstract Details

2007, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Industrial, Interior Visual Communication Design.
Industrial design has in the past been acknowledged as a complementary service or an afterthought by its business counterpart. On the contrary, it is regarded now as an organic part of business that continuously energizes business growth. The climate changes in the business world require that industrial designers not only pay attention to the physical perfection of products but also to the whole process of product commercialization. Business now calls for more entrepreneurial thoughts and efforts from design professionals, no matter where and how they contribute their creativity. Several prestigious industrial designers and consulting firms have already repositioned themselves as life-long partners of their clients or risked being their own clients. Their achievements have at least demonstrated benefits to end consumers, the industrial design community, and themselves. Intrigued by their accomplishment, I carried out this research in order to achieve a deeper understanding of how their business experiment evolved and where the future of this entrepreneurial practice lies. Guided by an intention of proposing product commercialization as a design business trend, I looked into issues and opportunities related to the traditional design consulting model and relative business theories regarding new business strategy and product commercialization. One-on-one interviews with design entrepreneurs greatly enriched this discussion with in-depth live stories. The outcome of the research concluded the necessity of product commercialization as a viable option for industrial designers and offered suggestions to consulting firms and individual designers, respectively. It is hoped that this research could stimulate design professionals as well as design educators to consider applying serious changes to their business practice and academic education.
