The purpose of this paper is to document the costume design and production process for The Ohio State University Department of Theatre’s 2001 production of Peer Gynt, a play written by Henrik Ibsen. The Department of Theatre’s production, produced in collaboration with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, utilized a version of Peer Gynt that was translated and adapted by Murray Ross. Phillip Thompson of the Department’s acting and directing faculty directed the production. Based on Norwegian folklore the story follows the life of a young man by the name of Peer Gynt. Peer becomes unhappy with the village life he has lived as a young man so upon the death of his mother he leaves his past behind and finds his fortune in a foreign land. The story was originally written in the style of a dramatic poem during the nineteenth century and contains elements of romanticism, fantasy and reality. The story is enhanced by music composed by Edvard Greig. This document contains a discussion of the producing situation, the production concept and design scheme, a character analysis, the process of mounting the production and an evaluation of the completed project.
