Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to document the costume design and costume production process for William Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing, as produced by The Ohio State University Theatre Department. The play will be produced in The Ohio State University Theatre Department's Thurber Theatre, February 21-March 1, 2008. Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy which centers on two pairs of young lovers involving the frequently used Shakespearean element of mistaken identity. The concept for this production as developed by the director, Assistant Professor Amanda Fox, sets Much Ado About Nothing on the beach in California in the 1960s. This concept centers around the entertaining and comic beach movies of the 1960s starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. The design elements for this production are a combination of symbolic and historic elements. The set design for this production is predominantly a symbolic representation of beach along California's coast line whereas the costume design is more historically based on the clothing of the 1960s. Research for the costume design of this production was collected from photographs and vintage patterns of 1960s clothing, as well as images of the costumes used in films and situation comedies of the period.
