Abstract Details

2014, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, EDU Teaching and Learning.
This qualitative study stemmed from questions about the use of eBooks in an upper elementary academic setting. Approximately 77 fourth graders regularly read eBooks integrated into the Science and Language Arts curriculum for 26 weeks. The eBooks used during the units included fiction and nonfiction eBooks, as well as static and enhanced eBooks. Along with field notes, data was collected from students through video and audio recording devices that captured group conversations, written responses to the readings and surveys after every major unit, and semi-structured interviews. Data was also collected from the teacher through monthly semi-structured interviews. The major findings of this study included: 1) Students had a positive attitude toward and experience with eBooks when they were integrated into the Science and Language Arts curriculum. 2) Students varied in their responses when using eBooks. There were indicators of procedural and substantive engagement. 3) Students recognized specific roles for eBooks in their learning. 4) Enhanced eBooks provided students with multimodal modes in order to construct meaning, which allowed the classroom to be more student-led than teacher-directed.
