With an increase in demand for ecofriendly vehicles, the automotive industry is pushing towards multi-layer and multi-material manufacturing. The ability to join a variety of materials is becoming an increasing concern and area of focus for many vehicle manufacturers. Rapid nailing is a possible method for joining these dissimilar materials. This study was conducted in order to determine the mechanical properties of rapid nailing joints and the effects of various controllable parameters of the nailing system. This project also sought to begin developing a predictive model in LS-DYNA for incorporating into vehicle crash models. The testing of the coated and uncoated nails inserted at various speeds evaluated the effects of the coating and insertion speed. Through push out, tensile, and shear testing, it was determined that the highest push out and tensile strengths were exhibited by coated nails inserted at a speed of 100 mm/sec. Additionally, the shear strength was found to be relatively independent of insertion speed and highest for the coated nails compared to the uncoated nails. The geometry of the uncoated nail was captured and used to create a solid model of the nail. This became the basis of the LS-DYNA model in which the load displacement curves of the insertion at various speeds were theoretically determined and compared to experimental data. A similar push out model was developed for comparison to experimental data.
