The relationship between sea ice retreat and Greenland ice sheet surface-melt

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Geography.
The Greenland Ice Sheet is losing ice at accelerating rates and the 2007 and 2012 extreme melt events add to the growing concern about the future trend of the ice sheet surface melt and its global impacts. In recent years some studies have established a correspondence between sea ice retreat and Greenland surface melt, but the understanding of the process by which a decrease in sea ice could potentially drive the observed surface melt increase is mostly dependent on a chain of correlations; the physical mechanisms behind the sea ice-surface melt relationship remain elusive. In this study, we correlate the multi-decadal record (1987-2012) of Greenland surface melt retrieved from SSM/I-SSMIS brightness temperature to sea ice retreat derived from the NSIDC sea ice concentration dataset. We extend the time period of analysis beyond 2008 when most previous studies end in an effort to test the spatial and temporal progression of the sea ice-surface melt relationship, especially during the 2007 and 2012 extreme melt events. Our study also attempts to examine the physical mechanisms linking surface melt and sea ice retreat through the analysis of relevant local atmospheric variables and weather patterns derived from the output of the regional climate model MAR. This study will also help understand the ice sheet response to oceanic forcing and thereby facilitate the construction of fully coupled ice-ocean-atmosphere models for future sea level projections.
