In Transition: Creating Early Successional Avian Habitat in Transitional Urban Spaces

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Landscape Architecture, Ohio State University, Architecture.
Since the 1950’s, early successional bird species have been rapidly declining in the U.S. as a result of habitat loss due to suburban sprawl. Birds that live in early successional habitat are often called disturbance dependent, as their habitats only exist immediately following a disturbance to an ecosystem. Cities are constantly in a state of flux between growth and decline, much like ecological systems. Urban sites which have been abandoned due to economic, social and political disturbances can be utilized to provide increasingly rare urban habitat once they are no longer occupied. Cleveland, OH has over 20,000 vacant properties scattered throughout the city, creating gaps and patches in the urban landscape. Altering the process of housing demolition by using dredged material as fill and targeted small scale site interventions can prepare the site to grow into prime early successional bird habitat, as well as provide cost effective alternative green stormwater infrastructure. Also, neighborhood based management regimes in accordance with the design can foster a community identity by the coordination of wildflower blooms and increased neighborhood access. Early successional ecosystems are ephemeral in nature, and therefore are uniquely positioned to inhabit vacant parcels between occupation and development.
