Data Acquisition, Modeling, Simulation, and Control of the Buckeye Bullet - The World's Fastest Electric Vehicle

Kromer, Robert John

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Over the last decade the Buckeye Bullet Program at Ohio State University has set numerous International and National Land Speed Records for electric vehicles. Both battery and fuel cell systems have been experimented with for the vehicles power plant, while induction and permanent magnate electric machines were investigated for the drivetrain. Designing, building, and controlling these systems for a Land Speed Racing application provides unique challenges that are not encountered in typical land vehicle operation. Two distinct challenges are covered within this document. The rst challenge is the design, implementation, and testing of a custom modular CAN based control and data acquisition system. The results from initial testing of this system with the 2010 vehicle are provided and an evolutionary system is then designed based o of these results for the 2013/2014 vehicle. The second challenge is the mathematical modeling and simulation of the vehicle level system. The simulator is validated and then applications are provided in reference to the 2014 Venturi Buckeye Bullet 3 vehicle. Speci c applications of interest are race strategy and stability control. Stability becomes a strong concern due to the vehicle's independent front and rear drivelines and the motor's high torque capabilities. The results from the vehicle level simulation are then provided with the goal of continuing to improve the team's world record setting vehicles.
