The effect of malnutrition on the readmission rates of elderly Ohio patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the nutrition status of elderly Ohio patients hospitalized for COPD had an effect upon their rate of readmission. A random sample of 337 patients discharged between June 1, 1994 and May 31, 1995 were categorized as normal nourished, moderately malnourished, or severely malnourished. Life Table analyses and Cox Proportional Hazards Regressions were then used to establish the importance of nutrition status on readmission, over a three year exposure period. The Life Table results indicated a statistical association between different nutrition statuses and risk for readmission, but did not control for other patient characteristics such as age, gender, length of stay, and severity of illness that may be correlated with nutrition and affect readmission. The Cox regression findings further highlighted the significance of nutrition on readmissions after controlling for these other variables and provided estimates of the differences in risk between the moderately and severely malnourished groups and the normal nourished group. Although the magnitude of these difference in risk varied across time, there is strong evidence that the moderately and severely malnourished COPD patients were at increased risk for readmission when compared to patients of normal nutrition status.
