Ace in the hole

Abstract Details

2008, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.

Before I ever touched a piece of wood, mixed a batch of plaster, or carved a piece of foam, I learned to see objects as signifiers of hidden realities. Objects summed things up in a quick, matter of fact way. I animated their existence and constructed their meaning in a way that let me understand events that were happening around me.

In my work, too, objects become signifiers of broader systems and ideas. I explore these ideas through processes that manipulate form, material, and context. Each piece is created or re-created through processes that show a history of my involvement and reveal how I embrace handmade construction. I group these objects or works together in a secondary construction process through which I hope to convey a multifaceted but still only partial understanding of the relationships between the personal and social.
