Abstract Details

2014, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.
It is my belief that architecture, especially the architecture of home, has the distinct ability to resonate through a person’s life, long after they have left that shell. As I was raised at the edge of Ohio’s Hocking Hills, amidst the remains of Ohio’s prehistory, I have developed a quixotic view of ancient civilizations and earthworks, as well as of the place that I call home. I feel the reverberations of my childhood landscape tied to the earthen architectures of prehistoric people with such intensity that these narratives have become the object of my daydreams. This landscape and my own childhood are the basis of Excavations, and is the premise of this essay. Excavations (2014) is a sculptural installation that was installed in the Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition at the OSU Urban Arts Space, in February 2014. Through an analysis of that work, this written thesis investigates my childhood, the architecture of my house, and my relationship to Pre-Columbian Ohio.
