"I'd created my own truths by printing my zine." Women-written Perzines as a narrative form for disclosure and advice giving

Dickman, Daina Elizabeth

Abstract Details

2005, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Comparative Studies.
Zines are independently produced magazines. They are written, produced, and distributed by individuals for non-capitalistic reasons. They incorporate the “Do It Yourself’ ethic and aesthetic. One genre of these is perzines (a contraction of “personal zine”). Perzines relate the personal experiences of the author to the audience. In particular this thesis will examine perzines written by women. This thesis has three parts. The first section of the thesis is intended to provide a context for zines. It discusses the economics of zines, social aspects of creating zines, different genres of zines, the history of zines, and issues of preserving zines in libraries and archives. This chapter is intended to make the rest of the thesis accessible even for those not currently familiar with zines. The second section of the thesis will discuss the use of perzines as a narrative form. It is particularly concerned with the use of perzines by women as a site of disclosure and confession. The last section of this thesis will examine how personal narratives in perzines are used as a site of advice-giving and advice-receiving. It will discuss how perzines attempt to mitigate the power-hierarchy inherent in advice-giving.
